PETALING JAYA: Two-time champions Maksak (Government Services Sports and Welfare Council) are on course for a hat-trick in the national futsal (five-a-side) tournament after notching two straight wins to qualify into the quarter-finals.
In the opening game of the tournament held at the TLDM Sports Complex in Lumut on Monday, Maksak defeated Johor 3-1. Yesterday, they cruised to a 6-2 win over a Klang Valley Selection to top Group D with six points.
Klang Valley Selection, a replacement for Selangor, who withdrew at the last minute, had P. Ganeson sent off for unsporting behaviour against the defending champions.
Maksak will wrap up their group fixtures against Penang today.
Teachers Training Colleges (TTC) “A” and Perlis are through to the quarter-finals after notching two straight wins in Group B.
Malacca, who just need a draw to book their ticket, defeated Pahang 8-5 and Kedah 6-2 while TTC “A” thrashed Masum 6-0 and Negri Sembilan 6. Perlis chalked up their wins against Negri Sembilan 8-3 and Masum 6-2.
A total of 16 teams are contesting in the five-day tournament and the national selectors, led by newly-appointed futsal coach Silvio Sergio Machada of Brazil, hope to call up new talent to prepare for three major tournaments this year.
The three tournaments are the Kuala Lumpur World Fives (June 3-6) at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil; the Asean Football Federation's (AFF) tournament (July) in Cambodia; and the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) tournament (July 28-Aug 4) in Japan.
