Petronas set for historic start in superbike debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's first superbike, the Petronas superbike, will make its debut in the opening round of the World Superbike Championship 2003 in Valencia, Spain tomorrow.

Petronas' head of motorsports, Norhayati Md Ali, said the machine had been tested and was ready for the curtain-raiser of the world championship.

The bike was tested by the Foggy Petronas Racing (FPR) last winter.

Meanwhile, FPR team owner Carl Fogarty said he was looking forward to the race.

“It is a tremendous achievement for Petronas to have made it to this stage and I think our entry comes at a great time for the (world) championship,” he said.

At the moment, the superbike will be handled by FPR's former world champion Troy Corser and James Haydon. Corser finished seventh fastest during qualifying yesterday. – Bernama
