AUCKLAND: Switzerland was yesterday on the verge of becoming the first European nation to win yachting’s America’s Cup, after disaster struck Team New Zealand (TNZ) when their mast shattered in a dramatic race.
The Swiss Alinghi syndicate, crewed with New Zealand’s best sailors, took a 4-0 lead in the best-of-nine series and while defender TNZ vowed they would be back to race today, the battered sight of their boat has broken the hearts of this sailing-crazed nation.
