PENANG: Penang's Aaron Kong and Zandra Aziela of Selangor began their campaigns in the SportExcel-NSC-Milo National Junior Bowling Circuit by grabbing the honours at the Megalanes Bowl in Prai on Sunday.
Aaron, a Masters gold medallist at last year's Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sabah, captured the boys' Open crown while Zandra took the girls' Open title in the opening leg of this year's circuit.
The 18-year-old Aaron had to stave off strong challenges from Selangor's Aiman Kelana and Penang's Adrian Ang to set-up a final match against Eric Ang of Penang in the step-ladder finals.
Aaron won the first match 223-182 against Eric to force a sudden death playoff. There was no stopping Aaron in the decider when he reeled off six consecutive strikes to beat Eric 257-222 for the title.
In the girls' division, Zandra finished as the top qualifier for the step-ladder finals. She defeated Sharon Koh of Selangor 176-168 for the title.
