Low sizzles to victory in Sungai Petani

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas EON Racing Team's Jimmy Low outclassed the rest of the field in the 2003 Perodua-AAM Malaysian Rally Championship held in Sungai Petani, Kedah, winning the two-day event by over six minutes.

Low and co-driver Muhammad Hilmi Zul Hassan doubled their overnight lead of three minutes despite having to grapple with clutch problems in the penultimate stage of the event.

It was also a second consecutive triumph for Low after he won the same event last year.

Low, however, nearly lost to his nearest challenger, Gunaseelan Rajoo who was forced to retire due to a badly damaged clutch transmission.

The second place spot to Perodua Lube Dagangan Racing Team’s Kan Chee Hong followed by Briton Andy Pawley in a Subaru, in third position.

“It was a good rally but with a number of difficult stages. We encountered a clutch problem from special stage seven onwards,” he said in a statement released by the rally's organisers here today.

“Luckily we managed to hold our act together,” said Low who dominated the two-day rally held in the rubber plantations of Aman Jaya, Harvard and Padang Buloh. – Bernama:
