US return to drawing board after Davis Cup slump

ZAGREB: The United States flew out of Croatia on Monday knowing that their dreams of a 32nd Davis Cup title will have to wait another year – and they face a battle to remain within the tournament’s elite group.

Their 4-1 defeat by a Croatia team inspired by a brilliant performance from Ivan Ljubicic, who won all three of his matches, meant the US suffered only their sixth first-round loss since the event began in 1900.
