Maradona's doc admits cocaine possession

BOGOTA: Colombian doctor Mauricio Vergara, who helped Argentine football legend Diego Maradona lose weight, on Monday admitted that he was guilty of possessing two kilos of cocaine when arrested last December.

Vergara was arrested by drugs squad officiers at the airport in Cali just before he attempted to board a flight destined for Buenos Aires with a stop-off in Panama.

“Yes I’m guilty. I made a mistake and I’m going to pay,” the 34-year-old, who faces a prison sentence of between eight to 16 years, told the Cali daily El Pais

“I take responsibility for my actions because I love my family and think that admitting it is the quickest and sincerest method of returning to those I love,” he said. “I know I’m looking at prison but afterwards I still have a lot of time ahead of me.”

Vergara worked for five months in 2001 with Maradona, helping the 41-year-old drop six kilos for a Boca Juniors match in November.
