BEIJING: China sentenced a football referee to 10 years in prison yesterday for taking bribes worth a total of 370,000 yuan (US$44,700).
Gong Jianping, then chief referee for the Chinese FA's First and Second Division matches, accepted money and goods nine times from 2000 to 2001, the official China Central Television said.
Jianping confessed most of his crimes at Beijing's Xuanwu District People's Court, it said.
He was arrested last April in connection with a match-fixing scandal involving five Second Division teams in October 2001, just days before China clinched their first-ever spot at the World Cup Finals. Reuters
