MSSM to organise three Asian and Asean level meets

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) will hold three championships at the Asian and Asean level besides introducing a relay competition at the secondary school level for this year. 

The principal assistant director of the sports division in the Ministry of Education, Abdullah Junus, said that the MSSM would organise the Asian schools boys’ hockey championship, Asean schools swimming championship and the Asean schools golf tournament. 

“Hockey will be held in July, swimming in June and golf in September,” he said after receiving Rakan Sukan sponsorship from Nestle Products Sdn Bhd for the MSSM here yesterday. 

Nestle would be involved in assisting the MSSM by sponsoring 22 sports – aquatics, badminton, football, netball, handball, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, golf, hockey, cricket, archery, sailing, table tennis, athletics, rugby, sepak takraw, squash, softball, tennis and bowling.

Abdullah said that 15 member countries of the Asian Schools Sports Federation would participate in the boys’ hocket tournament. 

They are China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Nepal, the Philippines, Bhutan and Malaysia. 

He added that the swimming and golf championships would feature all the Asean countries. 

Meanwhile, Abdullah said that the MSSM also planned to introduce a championship specifically for relays for students in Form One, Two and Four. 

The MSSM calendar this year also listed Malaysia's participation in athletics in Indonesia, sepak takraw in Thailand, table tennis in the Philippines, netball in Singapore, rugby triangular in Thailand, football in China, boys' volleyball in Hong Kong, badminton in Brunei and cricket in India. – Bernama
