KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have confirmed their participation in the second Asia Under-16 hockey tournament, which will be played in Bangladesh from March 1-12.
The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary, S. Satgunam, said yesterday that they would send an experimental side, comprising players in the Under-15 age-group, and those featuring in the Malaysia Junior Hockey League (MJHL) would not be selected.
“The dates of the tournament clash with the MJHL. But we have been informed by the coaches that we can send an Under-15 side to give them a good exposure. We will only select hose not playing in the MJHL,” he said.
The national Under-16 team competed in the recent MHF Under-19 international invitational tournament in Kuala L.umpur.
The team drew with South Korea and were beaten the national Under-19 team, India and Pakistan.
Coach Yahya Atan said that they would be able to assemble an Under-15 side for the tournament in Bangladesh.
“We have identified a number of players from national Under-15 tournament last year,” said Yahya.
“If they are not with clubs for the MJHL, we will select them. We will have a clearer picture of the players we can call up when the MJHL begins starts (Feb 8).”
