PARIS: Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband scuppered Australian rival Ian Thorpes bid to take him on as a sprinter on Friday when he won the mens 100m freestyle on the first of the two-day World Cup short-course swimming series here.
The Dutchman clocked 47.41, well outside the world record of 46:74 set by Russian Alexander Popov nine years ago, but it was enough to claim victory and leave Thorpe trailing in fifth place.
