Americans down for three Tests against Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States' men’s hockey team have agreed to play three Test matches against Malaysia in March.

Two of the matches will be played in Kuala Lumpur (March 13 and 14) and the other in Ipoh (March 17) ahead of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament.

Malaysia will also have two Test matches against Pakistan after the series with the US. Both matches will be played in Ipoh on March 19 and 20.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is scheduled for March 22-30 and the foreign teams in the fray are Pakistan, Germany, India, South Korea and New Zealand.

The last time Malaysia played in the US was in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics – in a playoff for 11th place. Malaysia won 4-1.

In Test series, it will only be the second against the Americans.

In 1987 at the Tun Razak Stadium here, Malaysia were beaten 1- 2 in the first Test and the second match ended in a 1-1 draw.

It will be the first time that coach Paul Lissek will lead the Malaysian team out for matches against the US.

“I have very little knowledge of them or their style. This will be good tests for our players,” he said.

He added that in the run-up to the Olympic qualifying in March next year, the national eam would play at least 50 matches.

“We have matches in Germany, Belgium, England, Australia and a tournament in South Africa as well.

“Then there is also the Asia Cup in September. And in December we will also go to Madrid, the venue of the pre-Olympic tournament,” said Lissek.
