LANGKAWI: New routes will be used for the cycling and running events of the Ironman Langkawi Malaysia Triathlon, which will be held on Feb 23.
Competition operations director A. Chandrakumanan said that the new routes were picked on the recommendations of various parties, including the police and sports bodies.
The move is aimed at avoiding traffic congestion, especially for routes passing through the town, as well as to give participants a closer view of Langkawis beauty, he yesterday.
The cycling race will begin at Dataran Helang and pass through Jalan Penarak, Jalan Air Hangat, Jalan Sungai Menghulu, Jalan Padang Matsirat, Bukit Malut, Pantai Chenang, Padang Matsirat, Jalan Kok and Datai.
It will then take riders to the Temurun Waterfall, Hotspring and Galeria Perdana areas before re-entering Jalan Penarak to head for the finish line at Dataran Helang.
The running event will also begin and end at Dataran Helang, passing through Jalan Penarak until Jalan Air Hangat in front of the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) before turning back to Hotel Seaview in Jalan Penarak for three rounds.
To earn the Ironman tag, a participant has to swim 3.8km, cycle 180.2km and run 42.2km within 17 hours. Bernama
