AUCKLAND: Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten battled his way past two Argentines yesterday to set up an Auckland Open final against Slovak Dominik Hrbaty, who himself beat two Spaniards.
Both had to play their quarter-final and semi-final matches yesterday after much of the programme was washed out by rain and the first of Kuerten’s two matches was a torrid encounter against seventh seed Guillermo Coria, which he won 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Coria forged into a 5-2 lead in the first set, but was overhauled 7-5 by the Brazilian. The Argentine hit back in the second set but Kuerten fought back to ease through the final set 6-2.
Kuerten's semi was an easier affair as he cruised to a 6-3 6-3 victory over Mariano Zabaleta.
Hrbaty beat David Ferrer in the quarter-final 7-5, 6-3 and then accounted for Felix Mantilla 6-2, 6-2. – Reuters
