PETALING JAYA: State FAs and clubs have been advised not to be hasty in hiring foreign players.

The deadline for registering local players is tomorrow but teams have until July 31 to list the foreigners.

The vice-president of the FA of Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar, said yesterday that teams needed to ensure that they did not end up with poor buys.

“We have all learnt from previous experiences. It no point rushing in to hire the foreign players before the season kicks off on Feb 8,” said Raja Ahmad.

Each team can hire two foreign players, who are below the age of 33. Foreigners who have featured in leagues in the Asean region over the last two years are not eligible to play in the M-League.

Raja Ahmad said that the FAM wanted the M-League to be competitive and felt that they could achieve this goal teams followed the guidelines provided.

“I hope the teams will comply with the rules and refer to the vetting committee before they hire a player. We don't want to have below par foreign players in our league,” said Raja Ahmad.
