PETALING JAYA: Superbike champion Zaqhwan Zaidi and 2020 Malaysian Cub Prix overall winner Helmi Azman will be ready to make Malaysia proud in the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race in Japan this Sunday.
The duo, along with Indonesia’s Gerry Salim, have been entered by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) to race under Honda Asia Dream Racing with Showa.
The trio will race on a Honda CBR1000R machine with the team managed by former MotoGP rider Makoto Tamada.
Zaqhwan went for a two-day test session in Suzuka along with Gerry last month.
Helmi will thus skip this weekend’s Malaysian Cub Prix round in Sepang due to his racing commitment in Japan.
“This is my first time participating in the Suzuka 8 Hours. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Honda Asia Dream Racing and Boon Siew Honda Racing Team for having faith and giving me this big opportunity,” said the 22-year-old.
“I feel at ease and I’m living a dream to be part of this team.
“I will give my best to learn and adapt fast for this race.’’
The Suzuka 8 Hours race did not take place in 2020 and 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
