Azroy records fastest time in CP150 qualifiers

Azroy Hakeem Anuar on his way to provisional pole in the Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championship at Sepang Circuit,

PETALING JAYA: Azroy Hakeem Anuar resumed from where he left off by taking provisional pole in the Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championship.

The Idemitsu Honda Yuzy Racing rider topped the time sheets in the CP150 free practice earlier and ended the day with the fastest time of 1:17.573 at the Sepang Circuit yesterday.

Azroy was only one of two riders to lap below 1:18 in the CP150 class in qualifying.

He was the winner of Round 4 in Terengganu in September before the championship was postponed due to the spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.

ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team rider Mohd Ramdan Rosli was a close second with 1:17.767. Mohd Izzat Zaidi ended the day as the third fastest rider with 1:18.244.

The grid re-assembled at the Sepang Circuit from today for six intense days of racing to complete the final four remaining rounds of the 2020 season.

Azroy currently leads the riders’ standings with 81 points and will be hoping to increase his tally in the remaining races to take the overall championship title.

Idemitsu Honda Yuzy Racing team manager Shahrol Yuzy said it is an unprecedented situation in the history of motor racing in the country with riders and teams having to go through four rounds in six days.

“The brunt of the challenge will fall on the shoulders of the team engineers. Should something go wrong with the bike settings, they may end up working round the clock for the entire week.

“It will be less of a problem for the riders who are used to non-stop racing schedules in the normal course of their career, ” said Shahrol.

The paddock was also abuzz with two interesting late entries from seasoned campaigners Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi and Abdul Muhaimin Roslan in the CP125 class.

Zaqhwan’s unexpected return to Cub Prix racing was made possible by the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team who entered the 2014 champion in the CP125 class as part of their research and development efforts.

Abdul Muhaimin made an immediate impact in his comeback race when he clocked the fastest time of 1:24.008.

Mohd Hafiza Rofa completed the one-two finish in CP125 qualifying for ONEXOX Racing Team with 1:24.011.
