A broken gearbox foils Mitchell’s comeback

PETALING JAYA: A broken gearbox put paid to Mitchell Cheah’s (pic) hopes of ending his European campaign on a high in the TCR Germany Touring Car Series.

Mitchell was running in third place when his Hyundai-i30 single seater came to a halt at the Red Bull Ring track in Race 2 of the championship in Austria.

Mitchell finished runner-up in Race 1 on his return to the championship where he is filling in for Austrian Nico Gruber for Engstler Motorsport.

Meanwhile, Antti Buri came back strongly to win Race 2. The Finn also came first in Race 1 but was demoted to fifth after serving a 30-second penalty for setting a personal fastest time under the yellow flag.

Despite the bad luck, Mitchell was still pleased with the overall results.

“I had a better start than yesterday from sixth place. But then nine minutes into the race, something broke and it left me with no movement in the car.

“It’s hard luck but that’s something I cannot control. Overall, it’s still a great week as I’m happy to get to race again.

“I was supposed to compete in the TCR Asia series but then the Covid-19 spoiled everything.”
