PETALING JAYA: Idemitsu Yuzy Honda Racing rider Azroy Hakeem Anuar clinched his first win in the 2020 Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championship season with a victory in Round 4 at the Terengganu Motorsports Track.

Azroy had been in superb form in the CP150 category on the 1.371km Terengganu track all weekend. He set a new lap record en route to pole in Friday’s qualifier and then a record-breaking solo run to take pole position in the Super Pole race in 49.397.

Azroy overcame a bad start to fall to fourth in the first lap of the race proper yesterday. Undaunted, he stormed back to overtake early leader Akid Aziz from Petronas Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor.

“I took control of the race on Lap 5 when I managed to get past Akid. But it took several more laps before I was able to carve out a significant distance ahead of the chasing group, ” said Azroy.

By Lap 11, Azroy had pulled ahead by a second. At the same time, team Petronas Sprinta Yamaha-CKJ Racing’s rookie, Mohd Aiman began making waves in the chasing pack and reduced Azroy’s lead to 0.3 seconds in the penultimate lap before settling for second place. Mohd Helmi Azman finished third.

The 21-year-old now leads the standings with 81 points, 15 points ahead of Helmi.

Meanwhile, the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team riders who returned the four quickest times in qualifying, were controversially demoted to the back of the grid due to technical infringements.

Mohd Aliff Danial Mohd Asri of Petronas Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor won the race clocking 13:08.521. Second was Mohd Adib Rosley of Ipone Yamaha YY Pang Racing Team (13:09.390) with Mohd Hafiza Rofa of ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team finishing third (13:15.210).
