KUALA LUMPUR: Six-time F1 winner Lewis Hamilton is just one title away from tying Michael Schumacher as the most successful F1 driver of all-time. Schumacher has seven titles.
While that’s the question on everyone’s minds, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Hamilton is not thinking about whether he can match the Ferrari great’s record next year. He has his mind on Christmas.
“Honestly, I am not looking that far ahead. So I can’t really tell you... I think what is really important is to grateful for what you have at the moment.
“Of course, I will be in search of another championships but in this sport, you never know when it can happen. It can be next year or the year after that. At the moment, I am looking forward to Christmas and my family, ” said Hamilton who was in Kuala Lumpur yesterday with teammate Valtteri Bottas to celebrate the sixth consecutive FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship win.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas became the first team in the sport’s history to win six double championships in a row. The Silver Arrows clinched the Constructors’ title in Japan, when Bottas claimed the race win. Hamilton finished the season with a flourish by leading from pole to flag in the last race at Abu Dhabi.
At the Petronas Twin Towers, Hamilton said it has become a tradition for the team sponsors to invite the drivers to celebrate the championships together. “They are a very important part of the team, and we could not have done this without them.“This incredible success is due to the hard work and dedication of every single member of our Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport family.
“Thanks to everyone at Petronas for your support over the last 10 years. We will keep pushing next season and hope to elevate our game together, ” Hamilton.
Bottas meanwhile said this has been his best season yet in F1.
“I am very grateful for all the hard work that went into making this possible. I am looking forward to another challenging fight next year, ” he said.
Petronas president and group CEO, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said winning six consecutive Constructors’ Championship was an outstanding demonstration of shared success.
