TAQIYUDDIN Hamid and Sazzlan Yuga had to go through nervous moments before giving Malaysia their first gold medal in pencak silat at Subic. Taqiyuddin-Sazzlan were tied with Abad Alfau-Abad Mohaidib of Philippines on 564 points after their respective performances in the ganda putra event.
However, the Malaysian duo were given the gold in the end on superior technique count.
Laotian pair Khounchaleun-Amphonh-Singsouvong Alisack got the bronze on 562 points.
Team manager Zaihan Isa said they were happy to get the ruling.
“We knew the Filipinos were our strongest rivals and we were confident of winning the first gold. I hope this success will help boost the others to fight for more medals, ” said Zaihan.
The trio of Mohd Syafiq Ibrahim, Mohd Juned Abdullah dan Nashrul Edzam Mohd Asri took bronze in the regu putera.
Pencak silat only needs to secure one more gold to meet the target of two set by the National Sports Council.
