Eight-year-old Saif on shortlist for SIC X-30 race

PETALING JAYA: Eight-year-old Saif Khalifa Erwin is the youngest among the 10 karters selected to compete in the SIC X30 National Karting Series Rookies Cup.

Saif, born on Aug 6 in 2011, will be joined for the three-round championship by Muhd Feroz Fezril, Muhd Daniel Hakimi Mohd Zahid, Firasz Azri Khairul Badri, Mohd Hasif Zainal Abidin, Dani Irfan Hairul Anuar, Mohd Hafiz Daniel Rozemen, Lim Shogun, Mohd Anaqi Mohammad Hafifi and Saw Guan Xian.

Aged between eight and 12, the young karters are among over 50 kids who applied for try-outs before they were shortlisted yesterday at the Sepang International Go-Kart Circuit to compete in the second edition of the SIC X30 Rookies Cup.

Apart from time recorded in on-track trials, the criteria for the programme also included their abilities, awareness and discipline.

While attached to the SIC Talent Development programme, the karters will be coached by top Malaysian drivers Dominic Ang, Brendan Paul Anthony and Jeremy Lee.

Jeremy, who is the chief coach, is an accomplished karter, topping various championships including a commendable second overall in last year’s SIC X30 championship. Brandon has been racing for the past 14 years, including 12 years in karting.

The three-round Rookies Cup opens at the Sepang International Kart Circuit on July 6-7 before proceeding to Langkawi for the second round on Aug 3-4.

The final round will be held on Sept 14-15 at Sepang.
