PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Mitchell Cheah (pic) clinched his first podium finish after claiming second spot in the third leg of the ADAC TCR Germany Touring Car Championship, which took place at the Red Bull Ring Circuit in Austria last weekend.
Mitchell finished Race One in second position (32:55.853). The race was won by Harald Procyzk (32:54.097) while Antti Buri came in third (32:56.175).
Mitchell also claimed his second “Honda Rookie Challenge Award’ with the result.
However, he failed to repeat his excellent performance in Race Two when he finished 10th (33:16.708).
The 21-year-old said that the result has motivated him to do well and secure more podium finishes.
The Sepang International Circuit Talent Development driver said: “I am really excited because I managed to finish second place. An amazing feeling and a precious moment for me.
“Thanks to all the crew who worked really hard to make sure the car was in top condition.”
Mitchell added that he had a good start in the second race.
“I started in P7 and managed to jump to P3 before the safety car came out.
“After the restart I was immediately in second and the chance to win was definitely there until the drive-through penalty I received for a jump start.
“It was very unfortunate and something that I could not do anything about,” said Mitchell, who drives for Volkswagen Team Oettinger.
Alex Yoong, his coach and mentor from Axle Motorsport, added. “Mitchell is really driving well. He had the pace to win Race Two but got unlucky with the penalty.
“We are super proud of him as he went up against top drivers despite not having any experience on these tracks.”
The championship will resume at Circuit Park Zandvoort in Holland from Aug 10-11.
