A ride in the right direction for Hafiza

Mohd Hafiza Rofa, who won the KBS MAM Kapchai Endurance Race on Saturday with his team-mates, hopes the win will help him ride better in the Spanish Championships beginning in April.

PETALING JAYA: Winning the KBS MAM Kapchai Endurance Race has proved to be a boost for Mohd Hafiza Rofa ahead of his first foreign adventure.

The 18-year-old from Terengganu, who will race in the Moto3 class of the Spanish National Championships in April, emerged as the champion in the four-hour endurance race at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).

Hafiza, and team-mates Mohd Shafiq Rasol and Mohd Helmi Azman, completed 76 laps to take the title for team Kajang Minimoto on Saturday.

“I’m in the midst of preparing myself for the Spanish championships and I couldn’t be more delighted with the win. Of course, racing in Moto3 is totally different from what I have been doing but I’m taking every chance I have to improve my riding skills,” he said.

The Kapchai endurance race, modelled after the famous Le Mans Motorcycle Endurance Race in France, is tailored specifically for underbone bikes with engine capacity of less than 150cc.

Hafiza will make his Moto3 debut with SIC Ajo Toucline team in the Spanish championships, together with Husni Aizat Abdul Malik, who will be riding in his second year.

The championships start on April 6 at the Jerez circuit.

While Hafiza still has plenty of time to brush up on his riding skills, Shafiq and Helmi have only until March to prepare for the inaugural Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup.

The competition, led by the renowned Alberto Puig, who was once behind the MotoGP Academy, is aimed at setting a formal path for Asians to be turned into world champions.

The first round of the competition will begin in conjunction with the first round of the MotoGP in Qatar on March 19-23.

“I’m delighted to represent the country in the competition. I hope the win in Sepang will be the beginning of many more wins for me,” said the 18-year-old Shafiq.

A total of 22 riders were selected for the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup from over 100 entries, and six Malaysians made the cut. Besides Syafiq and Helmi, the others are Nazirul Izzat Mohd Bahauddin, Mohd Adam Mohd Norrdin, Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam and Mohd Shafiq Ezzariq.
