Alex vrooms to a double in Audi R8 LMS Cup race

SEPANG: Former Malaysian Formula One driver Alex Yoong bagged a double in the Audi R8 LMS Cup race at the Sepang International Circuit.

In Rounds Seven and Eight of the LMS Cup, which was held as a support race for the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER), Alex managed to erase the bad memories of the previous two rounds in Inje, South Korea – where he crashed out during qualifying. He only started one out of the two rounds there.

Now with two wins at Sepang, the Audi Teda Racing driver is in the overall lead on 141 points while Adderly Fong of Kamlung Racing sits in second spot on 132 points.

In Round Seven, Alex had to fight hard as he dropped to fifth but managed to overtake Marchy Lee (Audi GQ Racing) with two laps to go to win the 10-lap race. Alex clocked 26:04.674. Marchy clocked 26:05.701 and Cheng Chong Fu (Audi Ultra) 26:06.126.

“It was aggressive racing here in Sepang right from the start,” said Alex, who started from pole.

“I had to try hard to keep people behind me as some of them were very fast.”

Round Eight saw Alex battling hard with Chong Fu before stamping his superiority on the Sepang track to win in 26:12.876 while Chong Fu took second place in 26:14.156. Adderly settled for third in 26:15.650.

It was be the perfect boost for Alex as he is also taking part in the 12-hour MMER race in the GT Cup class together with co-drivers Jacky Yeung and Ashraff Dewal.
