Penang girls send Perlis reeling


PETALING JAYA: The Penang girls stole the show on the first day of the National Under-16 Hockey Championships by scoring a whopping 17 goals past Perlis at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Nur Iman Adawiyah helped herself to five goals in the third and fourth quarter of the Group A match as Perlis were helpless to stop the goals from flowing.

Nurin Syazwan opened the floodgates for Penang in the ninth minute with a penalty corner flick and there were no stopping them from there.

In other Group A matches, Negri Sembilan edged Johor 1-0 while Pahang secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Kedah.

Penang will face Johor while Negri meet Kedah next.

In Group B, Terengganu were equally commanding in their 4-1 win over Sarawak while Perak narrowly defeated Kuala Lumpur 3-2.

Terengganu will next take on Perak.

In the boys’ event, Selangor and Melaka got their campaigns in Group B to great starts with comfortable wins over Perlis and Sabah respectively.

Selangor beat Perlis 4-0 while Melaka thrashed Sabah 6-0.

Negri had to work harder to earn a 3-2 win over Johor.

Selangor will look to continue their good form against Negri next while Melaka will look to do the same against Perlis.
