Poon: Arul pitting boys against top teams like Australia a brilliant move

PETALING JAYA: Do not be harsh on the national hockey team’s performance in the Australian tour, says former great Datuk Poon Fook Loke (pic).

In the tour in Perth, the Speedy Tigers lost all four of their test matches without even scoring a goal and conceded a whopping 18 goals.

But instead of whipping the boys, in an open letter addressed to coach A. Arulselvaraj, Fook Loke said the latter’s decision to play against the world No.1 side was a good move.

“The fact that you are on a mission to turn the current batch of players into quick thinkers is already a brilliant move,” said Fook Loke.

“We definitely need to develop and cultivate intelligent play in today’s highly competitive game of hockey, which is played at high pace and speed.”

He also gave tips on how to face the Australians in future.

“They should pack the defence to delay the Aussies from scoring early. Counter them by sending more long balls into their D-Box,” he said.

“Individually, we have the skill to match them, so play with confidence. We can do it, please tell the boys.”
