Megat takes challenge of helming UniKL in his stride

PETALING JAYA: For years, Megat Azrafiq Megat Termizi has been an understudy to coach A. Arulselvaraj in the Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) set-up.

When Arul took over the national team in August, it was natural that Megat is linked with the coaching job in UniKL ahead of the Malaysia Hockey League.

“Initially, I was quite hesitant to accept the offer because I’ve only been an assistant all these years.

“I’ve worked for several coaches, not just in UniKL but also in the national team that played in the SEA Games and Youth Olympics, ” said the 36-year-old, who has amassed 150 caps in his playing career.

“Arul said taking the post is a massive step forward in my coaching career. He said the experience would be useful although challenging.

“Although I’m nowhere near Arul, but this is a step I need to take.

“If I do not do it now, then when? The plus side is I know most of the players, so it’s just about applying my style.”

The former defender is now awaiting the return of six of the club’s seven internationals before they can commence training.

The players are goalkeeper Adrian Andy Roberts, Razie Rahim, Marhan Jalil (defenders), Ashran Hamsani, Pavandip Singh (midfielders), and forward Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Ahmad Jalil.

“Except for those who played in the Razak Cup in September, many players have stayed away from the pitch since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“So my first task will be to get them in shape. We still have time before our training sessions move into full swing, ” added Megat.

The men’s league is scheduled to begin on Jan 14 to Feb 20.
