Perak upset hosts Pahang in Razak Cup opener

Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak got off to good start in the 51st edition of the Razak Cup hockey tournament, beating Pahang 3-2 in a Division One Group B match at the Wisma Belia Stadium in Kuantan on Sunday.

Harmeet Singh gave Perak the lead off a penalty corner in the 15th minute. Perak then made it 2-0 in the 29th through Mohd Hariss Fadilla.

A minute later, Pahang, the runners-up last year, narrowed the deficit with a field goal by former international Robert Alcantra.

After the breather, Pahang equalised in the 38th minute off a penalty corner goal taken by Ahmad Kazamirul Nasaruddin.

Both teams then went all out to get the winning goal and it was Perak who scored in the 66th minute through Hafifihafiz Hanafi off a penalty corner.

In another Group B match, 19-time champions Kuala Lumpur defeated Penang 3-1.

Nor Syafiq Sumantri (third) and Harvinder Singh (16th and 60th) scored for KL while Azren Rizal was on target for Penang in the sixth minute.

KL coach K. Rajan said his team were a bit rusty in attack and they failed to make the penalty corners count.

“But I am not too worried. I believe we will get better as the tournament progresses. Our aim is to win our 20th title in Kuantan,” said Rajan.
