KUALA LUMPUR: Former World Cup and Olympic Games hockey umpire Amarjit Singh Jessy has created history of sorts.
The 48-year-old CIMB officer in Ipoh has been appointed the International Hockey Federation (FIH) umpires’ manager for five international tournaments this year.
He was started asthe umpires’ manager for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in March followed byand the World League Semi-finals in Johor Baru in June.
His next assignments as the umpires managerwill be the Asia Cup in Ipoh (Aug 24-Sept 1), the Sultan of Johor Cup (Sept 19-29) and the Junior World Cup in Chandigarh, India (Dec 6-15).
Amarjit began his career as a hockey player in the 90s, representing the Malaysian B team in 1992.
He then took up umpiring – and never looked back. To his distinction, Amarjit has umpired in four senior World Cups – Utrecht (1998), Kuala Lumpur (2002), Moenchengladbach (2006) and New Delhi (2010).
Amarjit also officiated in three Olympics – Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) – Amarjit has also umpired intwo Champions Trophy, two Commonwealth Games and numerous other prestigious international meets.
He also officiated in the Junior World Cup final match between Australia and Argentina in Rotterdam in 2005.
For the record, Amarjit has umpired in 154 international matches during his umpiring careerand was the first Asian umpireand
currently theonly Malaysian to have received the FIH Golden Whistle.
He views the appointment as a great honour not only to him but to the country as well. Amarjit said that it was a great honour not only to him but to the country as well for having being given the trust to be involved as an umpires manager for five tournaments this year.
“As there are many major tournaments next year, this is a stepping stone for me in preparation for the bigger leagues to come,” said Amarjit, who has also conducted umpiring courses in Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and China.
