Speed control is crucial

THE ability to control how far their putts roll is something that all good putters share.

If you have this in your arsenal, you’re on your way to playing some good golf. Touch, or feel, on the greens is important because a putt hit too softly will have no chance of going in and anything hit too firm greatly decreases the area of the hole you must hit in order for the ball to drop in.

The speed the ball rolls across the green affects the rate that it takes the break – the quicker it is travelling, the less break it will take.

You could have a great read, but if you hit the ball at the wrong speed it will not go in.

Quite simply, if you can work out how hard you have to hit a putt of any given distance on a variety of green speeds and slopes, you will make more confident strokes, make more putts and save yourself strokes on the scorecard.
