PETALING JAYA: A closing birdie on the final hole saw Ben Leong emerging as the best Malaysian finisher together with veteran Danny Chia on the opening day of the Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club.

The former Asian Tour winner carded an even-par 71 to claim a share of 36th spot at the par-71 Serapong Course yesterday.

Danny had a mix of two birdies against two bogeys to rank alongside Ben after the first day.

Former Asian Tour No. 1 Gavin Green tied for 57th spot after a one-over 72 while Nicholas Fung occupied 71st position with a two-over 73.

Gavin’s younger brother Galven Green occupied the 110th position after a five-over 76.

South Korean Ok Tae-hoon sensationally eagled the two par-fives on the front nine of the tough Serapong Course to take the clubhouse lead along with Thailand’s Suradit Yongcharoenchai.

Tae-hoon and Suradit fired five-under 66s in the final event of the season on the Asian Tour to lead from South Korean Kim Si-hwan, Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana and Justin De Los Santos from the Philippines, who returned 67s.

Play was abandoned for the day at 5.51pm due to poor weather (lightning and rain) with 52 players due to resume their opening rounds at 7.30am today.
