PETALING JAYA: Veteran golfer Danny Chia showed that age is just a number when he finished as the leading Malaysian after the opening round of the Singapore International.

The 49-year-old former Asian Tour winner carded a one-over 73 in windy conditions to occupy a share of 20th spot at the Tanah Merah Country Club.

Also finishing in the top 20 on one-over 73 is fellow Malaysian Shahriffuddin Ariffin.

Ben Leong had perhaps the most disappointing first-round experience when he made a triple bogey on the par-three hole 16.

Ben was looking steady at two-under but the costly errors saw him settle for a two-over 74 and a share of 31st spot.

Nicholas Fung was at 31st spot with three-under 75 while Asia’s former No. 1 Gavin Green occupied 57th spot with a four-over 76.

Khalin Jhosi of India carded a solid opening round of five-under 67 to grab a two-shot lead.

In second spot is William Harrold of England, who shot a three-under 69.

Tied for third spot is American Paul Peterson and India’s Ajeestesh Sandhu on two-under 70.

The Singapore International is the penultimate tournament of the 2020-21 season on the Asian Tour.
