Annual amateur series returns

Isac Saminathan happy tournament golf is back.

THE annual Perodua National Amateur Golf Series resumes next weekend with the Pahang qualifying round at Mahkota Golf & Country Club.

This welcome news follows a seven-month break brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Delta World, the organisers of the event, said they were granted permission to proceed with the competition by the Malaysian Association Golf (MGA) who have sanctioned it and received a license from the Commissioner of Sports of Malaysia.

World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) and Delta World CEO, Isac Saminathan said there are another nine qualifying rounds and the national final still to go.

“The return of the Series is good news for our local golfers and the golfing industry itself, but we are taking all precautions, including the MGA’s mandatory standard operating procedures (MSOPs) that dictate that only fully vaccinated players will be allowed to participate in the tournament,” said Saminathan.

“We wish to thank our participants and sponsors for their patience and continuous support that enables this tournament to move on despite the difficult situation we face.”

The Mahkota qualifier is the fifth round, following the Wilayah Persekutuan, Johor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor rounds staged between March 2020 and now.

The tournament, played in all 14 States and the Federal Territory, offers players the opportunity to compete for some attractive prizes besides the rewards of a brand new Perodua Bezza and Titoni watch for a hole-in-one.

Perodua are the event’s title sponsor, with Panasonic, Srixon and Zurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad the co-sponsors.

It is supported by the Youth & Sports Ministry, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board and the MGA, with Astro featured as the broadcasting partner.

The eventual winners of the Series qualify for the WAGC World Final, scheduled to be held in October 2022 at a venue yet to be determined.

The national final will be staged at Forest City Golf Resort in Johor on January 22, 2022.
