PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Gavin Green (pic) has put himself in a good position to record his best European Tour finish of the season after carding a third-round one-under 70 to be tied for 20th at the €3mil (RM14.78mil) Italian Open.

The 27-year-old will head into the final day on five-under through 54 holes, backed by a decent start which saw him opening with a pair of 69s at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome.

Sitting eight shots adrift leader Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark, Gavin can still have a crack at a top-10 finish where he trails by just three strokes.

The last time Gavin claimed a top-10 finish was at the Cyprus Showdown in November last year after a joint-seventh finish.

Gavin is desperate to put together a good run of form in order to keep his playing privileges on the European Tour which he’s been enjoying since 2018.

The 2017 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion needs to finish inside the top 115 of the Race to Dubai rankings to retain his card. He’s currently placed 223rd.
