Gavin comes out swinging but gets blown off course

PETALING JAYA: Gavin Green started his second Olympics campaign on a dismal note after battling to a three-over 74 to be tied 57th out of 60 competitors.

The 27-year-old could only mix two birdies with five bogeys as he trails leader Sepp Straka of Austria by a whopping 11 shots at the Kasumigaseki Country Club yesterday.

Gavin was playing it steady in the opening 13 holes when he recovered well to dropped shots on holes seventh and 10th with swift birdies at the eighth and 11th.

But further bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 18th holes saw him signing for a 74 to share 57th spot with Taiwan’s Pan Cheng-tsung, the 2014 Incheon Asian Games gold medallist.

Gavin will need to bounce back in the second round today if he is to salvage a respectable result on Sunday.

The competition features a 72-hole stroke play format and there will be no cut.
