GAVIN Green vividly illustrated why he is the country’s top-ranked golfer. The European Tour member carded a last day eight-under 64 to win
the PGM MNRB Closed Championship 2020 title at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club Saturday (Sept 26), while Aretha Pan secured the ladies’ crown.
In both instances, it was deserved reward for sheer commitment and determination.
Green, who departs Kuala Lumpur Sunday (Sept 27) to resume his exploits on the European Tour in Scotland, finished with a 13-under-par
275 total and a four-shot cushion over runner-up Sukree Othman. The latter closed out the tournament with a fourth round one-under 71 for
his nine-under 279.
Green’s final round performance was highlighted by an eagle-three on the 11 th hole and seven birdies. He had a bogey mixed in there.
Speaking after his first victory, he told The Star: “It’s good to win again at home.”
Touching on his game, he said he used “new” clubs on the first day and after that opening 71, went back to his regular set and felt more
comfortable out on the course. It certainly showed with two rounds of 70 before the 64 today.
“I played well today, ” he added. “But even then, I’m not entirely pleased overall. I didn’t get to practice much after the quarantine when I
returned home (from Europe) and it showed I think.
“But I’ll continue to work on it and I’m hoping for a decent showing in Scotland (Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open) next week.”
Khor Kheng Hwai, who started the last round in third – finished in third on 280 after a 71, while Paul San, who led or had a share of the lead of
the RM180,000 event over the first three days, slipped to fourth place on 281, having carded a two-over 74.
Daeng Abdul Rahman also shot a final round 71 and rounded off the top-five with a five-under 283 effort. Marcus Lim finished the leading
amateur in sixth spot on four-under 284. He was co-leader after the first round. Shahriffuddin Ariffin was next best in seventh on 285.
Pan won for the third time on Tour when she lifted the ladies title at Glenmarie, where she finished on two-over 290 for a one-shot victory
over amateur player Winnie Ng Yu Xuan.
Foong Zi Yu made it two amateurs in the top-three when she finished tied on 295 alongside Michelle Koh in third place.
Delighted with her win Pan said: “It’s just good to be back playing competitive golf again – and thanks go to the PGM Tour for that.”
She added that while she “struggled” somewhat over the first two days, she found her “rhythm” and that is what led to the win.
“I had two 74s on the first two days, but after that I got my swing better and then shot even-par yesterday – before the two-under today.
“Overall, I’m happy with how I played this week, especially it being the first tournaments after lockdown.”
