Worth the thrill: Winnie Ng Yu Xuan posing with the Selangor Amateur Open trophy at the Danau Golf Club in Bangi yesterday.

PETALING JAYA: Two tournaments was all it took for national junior golfer Winnie Ng Yu Xuan to return to her winning ways.

The 17-year-old, who is making a return after a 10-week break, clinched the Selangor Amateur Open title after she birdied the first extra hole to defeat compatriots Natasha Andrea Oon and Liyana Durisic in a three-way sudden-death playoff at the Danau Golf Club in Bangi yesterday.

The championships had to be decided in a playoff after a downpour in the morning forced the third and final round to be called off.

It was Winnie’s third title of the year and her career 14th.

She had won the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Challenge and the National Sports School Council (MSSM) prior to taking a break to concentrate on her International General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in May.

But Winnie showed promising signs upon returning to the course, finishing third at the Malaysian Amateur Open which was won by Natasha a fortnight ago.

“The three-way playoff was pretty terrifying and exciting!” said Winnie.

“I got the ball on the green in two shots, then two-putted to score a birdie. I’m very pleased to have prevailed against the two in-form girls. They did really well in the second round (on Saturday) to tie for the lead. Overall, it has been a great week.”

Hopes of seeing Muhd Afif Fathi completing a double for Malaysia were dashed when he lost to Singapore’s Low Wee Jin in the men’s playoff.
