Impressive show: Winnie Ng Yu Xuan traded three birdies against two bogeys in the second round of the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

PETALING JAYA: Winnie Ng Yu Xuan carded a steady one-under 71 to head into the final round of the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open golf championships with a one-shot cushion.

Starting the day as one of the joint leaders, the 16-year-old traded three birdies against two bogeys to remain top of the women’s division leaderboard on five-under 139 at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Winnie is one shot ahead of the Philippines’ Mikhaela Fortuna as the Malaysian edged closer to her ninth title of the season.

Mikhaela signed for a 68 and stands a chance of becoming the sixth Filipina winner in the championship since its inception in 2006.

Another Malaysian, Liyana Durisic made the day’s biggest move by firing a superb 66 to be two shots off the pace in third. She opened with a dismal 75 on Tuesday.

Natasha Andrea Oon is fourth on 143 following an improved 69.

Winnie was satisfied with her score despite failing to build on an encouraging front nine.

“I started really well as I was three-under at one point (with birdies at the first, fifth and sixth holes),” said Winnie.

“But I bogeyed the 10th and 13th on my return journey. I’ll take a 71 though, it’s still quite pretty decent.”

On her title hopes, Winnie said: “I’m hoping for the best as there’s still a lot of holes to be played.

“I can’t afford to slip up because the field is really strong this year.

“Besides my national teammates, some of the top Philippine competitors are also here.”

In the boys’ event, Shin Tae-won of South Korea still holds a commanding three-shot lead despite a two-over 74 for a 141 total.

Adam Arif Madzri is Tae-won’s nearest rival after he posted a successive 72 for 144, with K. Rhaasrikanesh a further two strokes adrift after a 76.
