EDISON, New Jersey (Reuters) - The battle for a $10 million (£6.37 million) jackpot that goes to the winner of the four-event FedExCup playoffs begins on Thursday in The Barclays at Plainfield Country Club, a fitting venue for the opening salvo.

In 1777, the Battle of Short Hills in the U.S. Revolutionary War was fought on the site of the current golf course and was the first battle after the United States adopted the Stars and Stripes as its official flag.
