PETALING JAYA: Danny Chia moved closer to winning his second PGM Tour title of the season as he heads into the final round of the PGM CCM Rahman Putra Championship in a tie for the lead with Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai.
The 42-year-old Malaysian was two shots off the pace at the start of the third round, but made a superb charge with a flawless six-under 66 at the Kelab Rahman Putra in Sungai Buloh for a three-day total of 14-under 202.
The score was matched by the 16-year-old Phachara, who shot a sizzling 65 at the joint RM200,000 Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.
American Brett Munson remained on course to defend his crown after posting a 66 to grab third spot on 203.
Sutijet Kooratanapisan carded a 67 for fourth place on 204 while overnight leader Quincy Quek of Singapore struggled to shoot 71 to sit in fifth spot on 205.
Danny said he was finally comfortable with his ball-striking as he posted his finest round of the week.
“I was scrambling over the last two days (Wednesday and Thursday), but today I hit the ball much cleaner. I had chances to go for birdies and I converted most of them,” said Danny, whose first title of the season came at the Tournament of Champions in January.
“I also made some good par saves and that kept the momentum going. It has been a good tournament for me so far but I’ll have to stay focus on the last day.”
