PETALING JAYA: South Africa’s Mathiam Keyser opened with a six-under 66 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the RM250,000 PGM Vascory Templer Park Championship.
The 27-year-old Asian Tour rookie suffered an early setback but managed to return strongly on the back nine with an eagle and four birdies at the Templer Park Country Club in Rawang on Wednesday.
“I didn’t start off well ... bogeyed my first two holes but managed to recover with a handful of birdies and an eagle after that,” said Keyser.
“I managed to get everything together on the back nine. I’ve had some good practice earlier this week, so hopefully I can get a good result this week. I think my game is slowly getting there.”
Trailing a shot behind is national No. 1 amateur Gavin Kyle Green, who is making his debut in the Asian Development Tour (ADT) co-sanctioned event. He is competing on the sponsor’s invitation.
“I kept the ball in place and avoided making mistakes,” said the 20-year-old US-based Gavin, who made six birdies against one bogey.
Eleven, including defending champion Nicholas Fung of Malaysia, his compatriots Khor Kheng Hwai and Ben Leong, China’s Ye Jian-feng and England’s Grant Jackson, shared third place after signing off with matching 68s.
