McAllister hails Brunei’s mentality after win at Sabah

PETALING JAYA: Brunei coach Jamie McAllister praised his side’s mentality after they edged Sabah 2-1 in their Super League clash at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday.

Ghanaian defender Ebenezer Abban put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute before Sabah levelled through Argentine striker Gonzalo Di Renzo in the 26th.

But Brunei struck the winner in the 65th minute when Australian forward Jordan Murray thumped a superb finish past goalkeeper Damien Lim.

“I thought it was an outstanding team performance. In possession, we controlled large parts of the game, played some really good stuff,” said McAllister.

“Away from home, it was a really, really professional performance. The boys worked hard, dug deep, and gave everything - they played with a good mindset.

The result leaves Brunei fifth in the standings with six points from four games, level on points with fourth-placed Sabah, who are separated only by goal difference.

Sabah coach Juan Torres Garrido, however, was left frustrated by his team’s second-half display.

“We are unhappy. I think we started properly, but we conceded a goal that we shouldn’t have. We didn’t play a good game in the second half,” said Garrido.

“Mentally, we weren’t strong enough to recover after going behind.

‘‘We didn’t have the energy to come back in the second half.”
