PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur’s Liberian striker Kpah Sherman has finally ended his longest ever scoring drought throughout his nine-year career in Malaysia.
The 33-year-old veteran has been firing blanks in the City Boys’ last nine games but broke his duck in style in their 2-1 win over Kelantan on Saturday.
His 65th-minute strike also extended KL’s unbeaten run in the Super League.
Sherman, who has always been a consistent scorer with all the teams he has played with before, admitted he was relieved to end what was his longest dry spell.
“The first goal is always the most difficult one,” said Sherman.
“This was actually my longest drought since coming to Malaysia — nine games without scoring. But finally, I broke that drought.
“I have to thank my teammates and the coaching staff for their belief and support. From here, it can only get better.”
Sherman showed little emotion in his celebration after netting the opener.
Pointing his fingers skyward, he appeared calm and reflective - a man quietly relieved to have rediscovered his touch.
His teammates, however, swarmed him in delight, knowing how much the moment meant to him.
Midfielder Zhafri Yahya doubled KL’s advantage in the 82nd minute before Syafik Ismail pulled one back for Kelantan deep into stoppage time.
KL are now second in the league with 20 points from eight matches, having won six and drawn two.
Despite his personal struggle in front of the goal, Sherman said he always found motivation in the team’s good run.
“I kept reminding myself that the team were doing well. KL are unbeaten and sitting second in the table - that’s the most important thing because I’m a team player,” he said.
“Even when I wasn’t scoring, I was contributing in other ways - creating assists, winning penalties, helping the team.”
