PETALING JAYA: It was the night Quincy Kammeraad truly announced himself as one of the Super League’s standout goalkeepers.

The Filipino shot-stopper produced a string of stunning saves, including a crucial penalty stop, to lead Kuala Lumpur to a 1-0 win over Terengganu in the Super League at the Cheras Football Stadium on Saturday.

While captain Paulo Josue delivered the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, it was Kammeraad’s brilliance between the posts that stole the spotlight.

The 24-year-old denied Terengganu playmaker Rainderson Da Costa from 12 yards just before half-time and commanded his box with authority throughout the game, frustrating Terengganu’s attackers time and again.

The win extended Kuala Lumpur’s impressive run to six matches unbeaten, with five wins and one draw, keeping them just two points adrift of Super League leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

For Kammeraad, the performance was a product of meticulous preparation and mental discipline.

“For me, it starts at home,” said the goalkeeper after the match.

“I did a lot of analysis before the game. I love watching footage and preparing for different situations.

“For many saves, I already have a percentage in my head of where to go – that helps me make the right decision in the moment.”

His analytical approach paid off in style when he guessed right to stop Da Costa’s penalty – a turning point that kept Kuala Lumpur in the game and eventually paved the way for Josue’s late winner.

“We want to stay unbeaten,” Kammeraad added. “That’s the goal when we face Melaka next. We want to keep winning and growing as a team.”

Josue, who calmly slotted home the winning penalty, was quick to praise his teammate’s heroics.

“It was Quincy’s best game so far this season,” said the captain.

“He made a lot of good saves and, of course, the most important one – the penalty save.

“In matches where situations are 50-50, you need someone decisive, and Quincy delivered tonight.

“It was a nice game, both sides had good chances. I’m sure the fans enjoyed it.

“I’m just happy to score and ensure we got the three points.”
