AS a player, Luis Garcia starred for teams like Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Now, as the La Liga ambassador, he is dedicated to promoting one of the world’s most prestigious football leagues. In Malaysia as a key figure at Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), his mission is not only to connect fans in Asia with La Liga but also to share Spanish expertise to uplift football standards in the region.

He speaks to StarSport in an exclusive interview.

Q: What is your first impression of Malaysia?

A: Fantastic. I love coming to Asia. Being in Kuala Lumpur and taking on my responsibilities (as chief executive officer) with JDT in Johor is a privilege. I have travelled extensively across Asia and have witnessed the incredible passion of the fans here. Their warmth and kindness are truly heartwarming. La Liga is committed to giving back to these dedicated supporters.

Q: How has La Liga evolved this season, especially with the intense rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid?

A: I wouldn’t count Atletico Madrid out of this equation. While the season feels like a roller coaster, it’s clear that Real and Barcelona are always in the mix. Earlier, I expected Villarreal to shine, but their season hasn’t gone as expected. Barcelona started strong but faced ups and downs, just like Atletico and Real. This demonstrates that points in La Liga are hard-earned. As we approach El Clasico, it’s still too close to call.

Q: With Atletico Madrid losing sporting director Andrea Berta to Arsenal, how do you think this will affect the club’s recruitment?

A: (Atletico coach) Diego Simeone is a master at adapting. Berta has left a significant legacy after 12 years, but Atletico have always shown resilience. I am not overly concerned. In the past, people worried about the league’s future after the departures of legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but now we have stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Lamine Yamal and others who are making their mark. Berta’s exit is a change, but I trust that Simeone and the club will keep Atletico competitive.

Q: Are you worried that young talents from La Liga might migrate to wealthier leagues like those in England and Saudi Arabia?

A: La Liga has a solid allure. Fans have been captivated by Spanish football for years. Talents like Lamine Yamal have emerged and shown a desire to excel in our league. Players such as Gavi, Fermin Lopez, and Nico Williams embody the spirit of their clubs. The league remains not just competitive but thrilling. Plus, Spanish clubs continue to shine in top European competitions, so there’s little to fear about losing talent.

Q: While Spanish clubs are celebrated for their attacking style, some, like Getafe, adopt a more defensive approach. How do you think this is perceived by fans?

A: Football’s beauty lies in its diversity. Not every team can play possession-based football like Atletico once did. Getafe exemplify the fighting spirit needed in competitive leagues. Fans appreciate skill, but there’s also a deep appreciation for passion, intensity, and tenacity.

Q: What’s your perspective on the rising popularity of La Liga in South-East Asia?

A: Our vision of going global has evolved over the years, driven by our unique style, passion, and commitment. With regional offices and initiatives like our football academy and La Liga Youth Tournament in Malaysia, we’re connecting with the younger generation. Football is more than just matches; it also encompasses activities like e-sports, which resonate with the new generation.

Q: How do you feel about the new generation’s desire for instant gratification?

A: As a father of four, I understand this well. They are accustomed to instant information and quick access to content. Our task is to show that football is more than just a sport; it embodies valuable life lessons. We need to share our experiences and highlight the diversity the sport offers. Recognising that some may not watch or play football, leveraging e-sports provides a modern avenue to engage fans. Regardless of the medium, we must instil core values like hard work, teamwork, and passion in their approach to life.
