PETALING JAYA: Young Scottish-born Malaysian striker Fergus Tierney is making quite an impression in the Thai top division (T1).
And the 22-year-old, who is on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim at Nakhon Pathom, could earn a spot in the national squad for the 2027 Asian Cup third-qualifier against Vietnam in June after being overlooked for the Nepal game on March 25.
Although Fergus is facing a big challenge to keep Nakhon, who are second from bottom in the 16-team league, out of the drop zone he has been a standout in their games.
He has featured in nine games, scoring two goals.
Fergus was also named man of the match when he scored in a 1-0 win over Uthai Thani on March 15 and was included in the league’s team of the week.
Fifteen days later, he found the net again in Nakhon’s 2-4 loss to Muangthong United.
Fergus’ father, Martin, said his son is giving his all in the Thai League in a bid to be part of the Malaysian team in the game against Vietnam.
“Fergus is proud to play for Malaysia and every day, he’s working hard to achieve that goal,” said Martin.
“The Malaysian coaching staff are also asking Fergus for his training and game reports and have kindly guided him with some specific workouts.
“It has been a great experience for Fergus playing in T1 and he is enjoying the challenge.
“The club are focused on avoiding relegation and Fergus is ready to help them meet that target.”
Fergus isn’t the only Malaysian player at the club as they also have midfielder Muhammad Khalil, who joined on-loan from Selangor.
“Having Muhammad for company every day on and off the pitch has been very helpful for Fergus,” added Martin.
“He’s very inspired and is proud to be named man of the match and also be included in the T1 team of the week.
“Hopefully, Fergus and Muhammad’s presence in the Thai League will inspire more Malaysian players to ply their trade abroad.”
