KUALA LUMPUR: Southern giant Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have added another world-class player to their squad with the signing of experienced Spanish defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

The Southern Tigers confirmed the move on their official social media platforms on Tuesday (Feb 4).

"From La Liga to Ligue 1 and Saudi, now to the home of the Southern Tigers, welcome, Alvaro Gonzalez," said JDT in a statement.

The 35-year-old boasts extensive experience, having played in La Liga for Racing Santander, Zaragoza, and Espanyol before moving to Ligue 1 with Marseille.

He also had a stint alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi club Al Nassr, with his last club before joining JDT being Al Qadsiah.

However, Gonzalez has been signed exclusively for JDT’s AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) campaign, where the team are aiming for a place in the last 16, and will not feature in domestic competitions such as the Malaysia Super League.

Meanwhile, Spanish media have reported that two of Gonzalez’s former Spain Under-21 teammates, Jonathan Viera and Roque Mesa, are also expected to join JDT, further strengthening the squad.
