Safawi: Don’t be intimidated by mixed heritage players

PETALING JAYA: Local players do not have to fear with the presence of more mixed heritage players.

Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim announced that seven mixed heritage players were set to join the national team, spicing up the competition within the team.

Winger Safawi Rasid for instance, does not see the addition of more mixed heritage players affecting the chances of local players to be part of Harimau Malaya.

“Take it as a challenge. We need that healthy competition. The decision to pick players lies with the coach, so to entice, do the best whenever you are playing,” said Safawi.

“I have to be in top form in every competition if I’m in to be part of the national team. I hope my goals and assists for Terengganu will lead to a call-up this March.”Safawi, who joined Terengganu on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) this season, has been in good form, scoring 12 goals in 25 games in all competitions.

He is one the most experienced players in the national setup earning 64 caps and scoring 22 goals.
