(Reuters) - Girona's Brazilian winger Savinho scored twice in added time to help the hosts beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0 in torrential rain on Monday and lift the season's surprise LaLiga package back to second place in the standings.
Girona now have 59 points, six behind Real Madrid and two ahead of third-placed Barcelona.
They dominated possession against Rayo but struggled to find the net on a sodden surface that deteriorated in the downpour before finally breaking the deadlock with a first time effort by Ukrainian Viktor Tsygankov in the 52nd minute.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Pep Chavarria got a second yellow card in the 76th and Savinho made the most of two quick counter attacks to strike twice in a four minute spell at the end to wrap up the points for the Catalan side.
